Ci sono alcune differenze sottili tra i termini “expat” e “immigrat*”. Ma la principale, nella percezione comune, è sicuramente che la persona in questione sia bianca o nera. Un uomo bianco e un uomo nero, per esempio, che si trasferiscono nello stesso posto e per gli stessi motivi, che fanno lo stesso lavoro o hanno le stesse qualifiche, verranno comunque percepiti diversamente. Questa percezione è influenzata dai media che ci presentano l’expat come una persona intraprendente e da ammirare, mentre l’immigrat* come qualcun* da guardare dall’alto in basso, da compatire o temere. Naturalmente questa distinzione è insensata, oltre ad avere una matrice razzista!
There are some subtle differences between the words “expat” and “immigrant”, but the main one, for most people, is surely about whether they’re white or Black. If a white man and a Black man, for instance, move to the same place for the same reasons, doing the same job and having the same competence, they will still be perceived differently. This perception is influenced by the media, which shows the expat as an admirable and smart person, and the immigrant as someone to look down on, feel sorry for or scared of. This difference doesn’t make sense, obviously, and is rooted in racism!
