Cristoforo Colombo ha scoperto l’America! Così ci è sempre stata raccontata questa storia, dal punto di vista dei coloni. I popoli colonizzati non avevano certo bisogno di venire “scoperti”, anzi. Ovvio? No, purtroppo, perché siamo appunto abituat3 alla versione suprematista della storia: il fatto che colonizzazione significhi oppressione e violenza non viene davvero affrontato; tutto viene idealizzato e giustificato. Se ci crediamo superiori va da sé che, dal nostro punto di vista, i popoli colonizzati ci hanno senza dubbio guadagnato a venire invasi da noi. E se non siamo in grado di prenderci la responsabilità dei crimini commessi nel passato, figuriamoci di quelli del presente.
Christopher Columbus discovered America! This is how we’ve always been told this story, from the colonizers’ point of view. Colonized people definitely didn’t need to be “discovered”. Right? It’s not that obvious, unfortunately, since we are used to the supremacist version of the story. We don’t really face the fact that colonization means oppression and violence; everything gets idealized and justified. If we see ourselves as superior, it goes without saying that, from our point of view, colonized people supposedly benefited from being invaded by us. And if we can’t be accountable for the crimes committed in the past, let alone for those of the present.
